Robert Van Camp
Creator of Great Scenic Railway Journeys
Robert Van Camp is the creator and producer, and now host of the Emmy Award-Winning Public Television Series, Great Scenic Railway Journeys. In his 32-year span, he has profiled some of the world’s most historic and scenic rail adventures, some as far away as New Zealand and Australia. The Public Television series has garnered over 100 Emmy nominations with Van Camp being awarded 20 personally.
Great Scenic Railway Journeys is the longest-running and highest-rated rail travel show on the Public Television network. It’s also the longest fundraising show, raising tens of millions of dollars for the network. During this time his programs have introduced the general public to the world of trains and all the wonders the tourist railways and museums throughout the world have to offer.
His long career being around the people who operate, preserve, and present America’s rail heritage has led him to become a part of this great movement. He served on the Board of Directors of the Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Railroad in West Virginia along with being a member of the Marketing committee for the Association of Tourist Railroads and Museums, which is now called the Heritage Rail Alliance. He has also worked as a consultant with many railroads that are looking to start up passenger services, as well as helping to grow current passenger operations to be more successful and sustainable. He has personally saved and restored over 20 historic passenger cars, which he is restoring and leasing to several heritage railroads across the country. Read about one of the cars he restored here.
